“We need to look at some of the varying programs that the university has proposed in practical, out-in-the-grove situations over a period of time,” Story says. “I’m measuring these programs against my own … I’m a guy that’s willing to learn and willing to try new things.”
Story wants to learn how best to apply nutrition. “Can we feed the trees completely on the ground, or can we feed them completely with foliar, or is a combination best? … We’re going to know in two years.”
Story adds that it’s “a big deal” that fertilizer manufacturers will provide the products used in the trials. “When we started the trial, we were providing the materials – most of them,” he says. “I think this will encourage more people to participate in the trials. Some of the materials are a little more expensive than some growers are used to using.”
In encouraging more grower participation, Story says, “It’ll be good to have more varying situations looked at.” Interested growers should contact Vashisth (tvashisth@ufl.edu).
