Past accomplishments and plans for the future were discussed at Peace River Valley Citrus Grower Association’s (PRVCGA) annual meeting in Arcadia April 15. Attendees also got some laughs from a 30-minute stand-up comedy routine by Tim the Dairy Farmer, acting as keynote speaker.
PRVCGA Chairman R. Roy Petteway of Hardee County summarized successes from the past year, including increasing local orange juice marketing within the association’s geographic region.
Other accomplishments in the past year, cited by PRVCGA Executive Director Kait Shaw, included:
- Contributing $10,000 in political action committee donations in the 2020 elections; all supported candidates won their elections
- Donating more than 5,000 gallons of orange juice to the community during the COVID-19 pandemic
- Supporting a 4-H citrus club with 80 youngsters aged 5 to 18
- Providing all PRVCGA members with accurate resources as protocols for COVID-19 changed and developed
Shaw said the association plans to increase its community involvement and educational events about the benefits of orange juice. She also called for more grower involvement in the association.
Joining Petteway as PRVCGA officers for the coming year are Vice Chairman John Matz, also from Hardee County; Treasurer Ashley Schafer from DeSoto County; and Member-at-Large Bo Meador from DeSoto County. The association’s board of directors is comprised of Callon Keen Jr. and Wes Soria, both from Manatee County; Jonathan Brown, Chris Kamberg and Colt Harrison, all from DeSoto County; and Adam Bunch, Cindy Parrish and J.R. Gough, all of Hardee County.
