Brazil will continue to lead the world in orange and orange juice production in 2022–23. China continues to produce the most tangerines/mandarins and grapefruit. Mexico will remain the largest producer of lemons and limes.

Global production of all varieties is forecast to be lower in 2022–23 than in the prior year. These projections were made by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA FAS).

ORANGES
Global orange production for 2022–23 is estimated 5% lower than the prior year at 47.5 million metric tons (MMT). Lower production in the European Union and the United States is only partially offset by a larger crop in Egypt. Leading producers are expected to be:

  • Brazil, 16.5 MMT
  • China, 7.6 MMT
  • European Union, 5.9 MMT
  • Mexico, 4.2 MMT
  • Egypt, 3.6 MMT
  • United States, 2.5 MMT

ORANGE JUICE
Global orange juice production is forecast 7% lower to 1.6 MMT. Production is down due to reduced fruit available for processing in Brazil, the European Union, Mexico and the United States. Leading producers are projected to be:

  • Brazil, 1.1 MMT
  • Mexico, 176,000 metric tons (MT)
  • United States, 125,000 MT
  • European Union, 55,000 MT
  • South Africa, 33,000 MT
  • China, 18,000 MT

TANGERINES/MANDARINS
Global production is forecast down 1.2 MMT to 36.6 MMT. Declines are expected in China, Morocco and Turkey due to unfavorable weather. Leading producers are forecast to be:

  • China, 26.5 MMT
  • European Union, 3 MMT
  • Turkey, 1.5 MMT
  • Japan, 921,000 MT
  • Morocco, 900,000 MT
  • United States, 820,000 MT

LEMONS/LIMES
Global production is forecast down 7% to 9.3 MMT with lower production in Argentina, Mexico and Turkey due to unfavorable weather and higher input costs. Leading producers are expected to be:

GRAPEFRUIT
Global production is estimated down 2% to 6.8 MMT due to unfavorable weather and reduced production in China, Mexico, Turkey and the United States. Leading producers are projected to be:

  • China, 5.2 MMT
  • Mexico, 420,000 MT
  • South Africa, 385,000 MT
  • United States, 294,000 MT
  • Israel, 190,000 MT
  • Turkey, 186,000 MT
