Less Citrus Production in Morocco

Production of all citrus varieties in Morocco will decline in 2022–23, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA FAS) confirmed in a recent report. The report includes an update on the area planted for each variety and the expected volume of exports. Morocco does not import fresh citrus.

TANGERINES/MANDARINS

Fresh tangerine/mandarin production is projected at 927,000 metric tons (MT) in 2022–23, down from 1.36 million MT in 2021–22. The area planted in tangerines/mandarins this year is 59,150 hectares, down from 65,750 hectares in 2021.

Morocco is expected to export 425,000 MT of tangerines/mandarins in 2022–23, down significantly from 625,000 MT the prior season. Chief export destinations are the European Union, Russia, the United States, Canada and Sub-Saharan Africa.

ORANGES

Fresh orange production in Morocco is projected at 783,000 MT in 2022–23, down from 1.15 million MT the prior season. The area planted in oranges is 58,500 hectares, down from 59,600 hectares in 2021.

Morocco is expected to export 80,000 MT of fresh oranges in 2022–23, down from 130,000 MT the prior season. Leading export destinations are Canada, Russia, the United States, Sub-Saharan Africa and the European Union.

LEMONS/LIMES

Morocco’s fresh lemon/lime production is forecast at 35,000 MT, down from 45,000 MT the prior season. The area planted in lemons/limes is 3,900 hectares, down from 4,000 hectares in 2021.

Morocco is projected to export 7,000 MT of lemons/limes in 2022–23, the same amount as the prior season. Leading export destinations are Sub-Saharan Africa, Russia, Canada and the European Union.

ORANGE JUICE
Morocco’s orange juice production is projected to be 4,000 MT in 2022–23, down from 5,500 MT the prior season.

The country is expected to export 2,500 MT of orange juice, down from 3,057 MT the prior season. OJ imports are forecast at 2,000 MT, up from 1,780 MT the prior season.
