The Citrus Achievement Award has been honoring outstanding industry leaders since 2001. Recipients were previously recognized in Florida Grower magazine. With the consolidation of Florida Grower and Specialty Crop Industry magazines to create Specialty Crop Grower, the award now has a new home in Citrus Industry magazine. The move was made possible by award sponsor TJ BioTech.

The June issue of Citrus Industry features the 2024 Citrus Achievement Award winner, Brenda Eubanks Burnette. Countless members of Florida’s citrus community have come to know and love Burnette for the unique role she has played in the industry for more than four decades. From Florida Citrus Queen to executive director of the Florida Citrus Hall of Fame, her career has centered on the promotion and preservation of the state’s citrus industry. Learn about the many ways she continues to uplift the Florida citrus industry in this month’s cover story.

Growers applying trunk injection of oxytetracycline (OTC) to their trees will find some encouraging news in a June article on the relationship between roots and OTC treatments. Data from a Syngenta soil-sampling program indicates the treatment is improving rot mass and density.

With hurricane season starting June 1, growers will want to read the article on factors that contribute to trees standing up to strong winds. In a research trial, University of Florida and U.S. Department of Agriculture researchers simulated wind-induced uprooting of trees. They found differences in the force needed to uproot trees based on tree size and rootstock.

If you weren’t able to attend the recent Florida Citrus Growers’ Institute, you can read about some of the topics speakers addressed at the event. This includes Citrus Research and Development Foundation priorities, daily irrigation recommendations and the latest phytophthora findings.
