HLB has drastically changed how citrus is grown in Florida. The September issue of Citrus Industry magazine offers insight on some of the newer production practices growers are using to manage the disease.

In the September cover story, Citrus Industry Editor-in-Chief Frank Giles looks at how citrus nutrient management recommendations are continuing to evolve in the HLB era. In the article, Davie Kadyampakeni, University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) associate professor, tells what lessons have been learned so far in his studies to develop new fertilizer recommendations for citrus. He shares guidance on the number of annual applications as well as alternative fertilizer sources.

Ariel Singerman’s article analyzes tree age and yield from an economic perspective in order to help determine which trees could benefit most from trunk-injection therapy. The UF/IFAS associate professor found significant differences between Valencias and early and mid-season oranges when it comes to how yields changed over time based on tree age.

You probably know by now that frequent irrigation in small doses is recommended for HLB-affected trees. Find out the many specific advantages this practice delivers to trees. The good news is that you don’t have to spend more money on water to get the benefits. Tripti Vashisth and Mary Sutton share the details of their research in their article.

Also in the September issue, you’ll find a wrap-up of the 2024 Citrus & Specialty Crop Expo. The Aug. 21–22 event attracted a good crowd of growers to the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa. They came to hear the latest citrus research while earning continuing education units, network with their peers and visit with vendors.

There will be more opportunities to get out and about in the citrus industry later this year. Peter Chaires shares a rundown of upcoming citrus field days and variety displays in his monthly Citrus Nursery Source article.
