The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) has started a study to estimate the agricultural impacts resulting from Hurricane Helene in the state of Florida. Results of a survey, which can be accessed here, will be combined with a detailed baseline database on agricultural assets in Florida to estimate and communicate production losses.

The information UF/IFAS obtains will be used to support informed local, state and federal decision-making processes related to disasterdeclaration, response and relief. More specifically, survey responses and subsequent analyses provide data and insights to industry associations, government agencies, policy makers and emergency management personnel. All data for individual farm businesses and survey respondents are maintained confidentially. Only group totals or averages will be disclosed.

In addition to using the link above to access the survey, agriculturists can contact their local UF/IFAS Extension county offices to report by phone, receive a paper copy or request an in-person assessment, where available.

The disaster assessment survey requests the general location of the operation (county and ZIP code), commodity-specific details including total acreage, affected acreage and estimated production losses. There is also an option to supply additional information on infrastructural assets, stored products or stored agricultural inputs that might have been damaged or destroyed. Respondents have the ability share additional experiences and photos if they desire.

UF/IFAS noted that other agencies and organizations also collect much of the same information, but each is using it for a different purpose. The different agencies and organizations often do share insights from the data they are collecting to support the various efforts related to disaster declaration, response and relief. These efforts are seen as complementary.
