The Citrus AI app created by Rohan Dash, an 11th-grade student at Pine View School in Sarasota County, earned first place in the 2024 Congressional App Challenge for the 17th Congressional District of Florida. The app is designed to support Florida’s citrus industry by analyzing crop health, predicting threats and optimizing resource usage.
“Rohan Dash’s Citrus AI app stands out as a meaningful solution to support one of Florida’s most important industries,” said 17th District Congressman Greg Steube. “I applaud all participants for their impressive work and look forward to seeing the great achievements they’ll bring to the tech world.”
See Dash’s Citrus AI App video entry here. In the video, Dash cites a 90% decline in Florida citrus production and a 62% decline in citrus jobs in recent years due to diseases. He says the diseases are hard to detect and can spread rapidly. Dash describes his creation as a web-based app that detects citrus diseases from an image. He also tells how he created the app.
Every year, students are encouraged to create and submit their original apps for a chance to win the Congressional App Challenge. Each challenge is district-specific. Winning apps are put on display in the U.S. Capitol Building for one year, and winning teams are invited to the #HouseofCode event in Washington. Winners can also apply for the ARTS Act Copyright Waiverto have their registration fees waived if they elect to copyright their creation.
