The Citrus Industry section in the March issue of Specialty Crop Grower magazine offers timely information citrus growers won’t want to miss.
Now is the time for Florida citrus producers to begin thinking about their disease management programs for the season. Megan Dewdney, University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) plant pathologist, offers a foliar disease outlook to help growers prepare to protect their crops. She says diseases to be on the lookout for this spring are postbloom fruit drop, citrus canker, greasy spot and melanose. For each disease, Dewdney discusses key considerations and management recommendations.
Soil health has taken on greater importance in the age of citrus greening. In the March issue, a team of UF/IFAS researchers share the latest research on methods commonly used to increase citrus soil health. The authors provide insights on cover crops, compost and other amendments. You may be surprised to learn what product showed no efficacy in improving soil organic matter. Read the article to get the details.
In his UF/IFAS Citrus State column, Scott Angle, UF/IFAS senior vice president for agriculture and natural resources, gives an update on the newly launched Crop Transformation Center. The center is making strides to bring growers faster genetic solutions to HLB.
Also aimed at assisting growers are expedited propagation programs, which Peter Chairs, executive director of the New Varieties Development & Management Corp., details in his March Citrus Nursery Source article. He shares information on the newest additions to the Florida Department of Citrus Program for Expedited Propagation and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Accelerated Budwood Initiative.
