The U.S. Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA/FAS) has projected increased production of Moroccan oranges, orange juice (OJ) and lemons/limes in 2024–25 compared to the prior season.
ORANGES
For 2024–25, orange production in Morocco is expected to increase by 17%, reaching 960,000 metric tons (MT). Area planted is projected at 58,300 hectares, up from 58,200 hectares in 2023–24.
USDA/FAS projects orange exports for 2024–25 will reach 90,000 MT, a 50% increase from the prior year. Moroccan exporters continue to face intense competition, particularly from Egypt and Türkiye. However, there has been a notable increase in exports to the United States, driven by reduced production in California.
No orange imports have been reported for the past three seasons.
ORANGE JUICE
Moroccan OJ production for 2024–25 is forecast at 55,000 MT, 10% higher than in 2023–24.
USDA/FAS estimates that Moroccan OJ exports will reach 3,700 MT in 2024–25, about 23 MT higher than in the last year.
Morocco is expected to import 3,000 MT of OJ in 2024–25, a decrease of 399 MT over the previous year. Decreased imports reflect the domestic production increase.
LEMONS/LIMES
USDA/FAS forecasts lemon and lime production for 2024–25 to reach 45,000 MT, about 12.5% higher than in 2023–24. Production increases are due to the increase in area harvested (3,960 hectares in 2024–25 compared to 3,950 hectares the prior year).
Lemon/lime exports for 2024–25 are projected to reach 7,000 MT, about 2,000 MT more than in 2023–24. No lemon/lime imports have been reported over the past three years.
Production is also expected to increase for Moroccan tangerines and mandarins; read more on that here. Get the full USDA/FAS report on Moroccan citrus here.
