Mexico’s Citrus Crops to Increase

Mexico’s production of lemons/limes and grapefruit are forecast in a U.S. Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA/FAS) report to increase in 2024–25 compared to the prior year.

LEMONS/LIMES

The lemon/lime production forecast for 2024–25 is 3.5 million metric tons (MMT), an 8% increase from the previous year.

The forecast for lemon/lime planted area in 2024–25 is 223,500 hectares, up from 222,643 hectares the previous year. In 2023, Michoacan accounted for more than 28% of total planted area followed by Veracruz with 24%, Oaxaca with 11% and Colima with 10%.

Lemon/lime exports for 2024–25 are forecast at 750,000 metric tons (MT), 6% more than the previous year. The export forecast is based on increased total supply and steady demand driven by the U.S. market.

Lemon/lime imports in 2024–25 are projected to remain unchanged from the prior year at 5,000 MT.

GRAPEFRUIT

Mexico’s grapefruit production forecast for 2024–25 is 489,000 MT, a minimal increase from the prior year. The largest volume of grapefruit produced in Mexico continues to be the “doble roja” or double red category, which includes the Rio Red, Flame and Ruby Red varieties.

Mexico’s grapefruit planted area for 2024–25 is forecast at 22,140 hectares, a minimal increase from the prior year. The state of Veracruz accounted for 36% of planted area followed by Michoacan with 27%, Tamaulipas with 11% and Nuevo Leon with 10%. These four states represent more than 94% of total planted area.

Mexico’s fresh grapefruit exports for 2024–25 are projected at 10,000 MT, up from 9,000 MT the prior year.

Mexico’s grapefruit imports are minimal. The import forecast for 2023–24 was for 2,000 MT. Over the past seven years, Mexico imported fresh grapefruit only from the United States.
