A U.S. Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA FAS) report forecasts Chinese mandarin and grapefruit production will both increase slightly in 2024–25.
TANGERINES/MANDARINS
China’s production of tangerines and mandarins is forecast at 27 million metric tons (MMT), up from 26.9 MMT the prior year. Increasing production in multiple cities is expected to outpace the negative effects of citrus greening disease in Guangdong and Guangxi, excessive rain during the flowering phase, and heat-damaged fruit in Sichuan, Hubei and Hunan.
Planted area is projected at 890,080 hectares, up from 890,050 hectares the prior year.
Imports of mandarins and tangerines in 2024–25 are expected to rebound to 50,000 metric tons (MT), as the crop size and quality from South Africa and Australia are expected to improve. Imports totaled 43,794 MT the prior year.
China’s exports of mandarins and tangerines in 2024–25 is forecast at 1.2 MMT, up from 1.097 MMT the prior year. The top five international buyers are Vietnam, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Indonesia and Thailand.
GRAPEFRUIT
Total Chinese pomelo and grapefruit production in 2024–25 is forecast at 5.25 MMT, a slight increase from 5.2 MMT the prior year.
In addition to Fujian and Guangdong, Guangxi and Jiangxi grow large volumes of pomelos and hybrid grapefruit varieties. Meizhou in Guangdong and Pinghe in Fujian are famous for their golden pomelo and red flesh pomelos. Grapefruit hybrids are mostly produced in the provinces of Hainan, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hubei and Jiangxi. In recent years, the provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan began producing pomelos.
Grapefruit imports for 2024–25 are forecast at 90,000 MT, similar to the previous year’s 89,220 MT. Major suppliers in 2023–24 included South Africa, Laos, Thailand, Egypt, Israel and Taiwan.
Pomelo exports for 2024–25 are forecast at 230,000 MT, up 12.7% from the previous year. The increased exports reflect the growing international demand for Chinese pomelos and grapefruit. Top export destinations include The Netherlands, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine, Romania and Canada.
