The 2025 Florida Citrus Growers’ Institute had a different setup compared to previous years. Scientists from the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) convened at South Florida State College in Avon Park on April 8 to share research that will help shape the future of the Florida citrus industry.
Chris Oswalt, UF/IFAS citrus Extension agent who helped plan the event, discussed the impact of having scientists from all across Florida in one place.
“We invited researchers who are doing citrus research work in the state of Florida to come and set up booths to provide information on the kind of work they’re doing from the different UF/IFAS research and education centers,” said Oswalt. “We had people from Lake Alfred at the Citrus Research and Education Center, from the Indian River Research and Education Center in Fort Pierce and from the Southwest Florida Research and Education Center in Immokalee.
“We’re very fortunate that we were able to have all of these researchers that want to put in the time to give the growers an opportunity to see the kinds of work that they’re doing. We do have many research centers across the state of Florida that do citrus research work. It’s very difficult to be able to physically visit all of those locations and see those folks. So, we thought it would be really beneficial for the growers to have them all here, so they’d have a chance to meet them and find out what’s going on.”
Oswalt added that citrus growers who were unable to attend this year’s Florida Citrus Growers’ Institute can view PDF and video presentations here.
