A July Specialty Crop Grower magazine article explores the potential of trunk injection for fresh market citrus. While trunk injection of oxytetracycline has become a common practice in Florida citrus grown for juice, growers of fresh market varieties have expressed interest in this HLB-management tool. Therefore, University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) researchers are studying trunk injection in fresh orange and mandarin varieties so use recommendations can be established for growers.

UF/IFAS scientists are also studying another tool for HLB management — individual protective covers (IPCs). Their latest work is aimed at understanding how IPCs affect water use. A July article delves deeper into this issue and compares the differences between zip-tied and open-bottom IPCs.

Have you heard that Florida’s best management practices (BMPs) for citrus have been revised? The long-overdue update takes HLB into account in determining new guidelines for citrus irrigation and nutrition. Find out how to access the current citrus BMPs manual in the article. Get more in-depth information on the new BMPs in the July digital issue.

In his Citrus Nursery Source feature, Peter Chaires tells about an international meeting of the minds that may be of interest to citrus nursery growers. Get the details on the International Society of Citrus Nurseries’ International Congress in Chile.

Back this month after a brief hiatus in June are the popular Pieces of the Past and The Buzzz columns. In Pieces of the Past, learn about Herman Zeuch, an early citrus pioneer in Vero Beach, Florida. The Buzzz includes the first forecast for Brazil’s 2025-26 orange season as well as information on a trunk-injection biopesticide currently in development.
