A report from IndexBox indicates Europe’s citrus fruit market will grow steadily over the next decade in both volume and value. The market is projected to increase to 13 million tons by the end of 2035, with a market value of $14 billion (in nominal wholesale prices).  

RECENT FIGURES

The revenue of the citrus fruit market in the European Union dropped to $12.2 billion in 2024, down 12.1% from the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs and retailers’ margins).

The market value increased at an average annual rate of 1.3% over the period from 2013 to 2024; with some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $13.8 billion in 2023 and then dropped the following year.

In value terms, the largest citrus fruit markets in the European Union were Italy ($3.7 billion), Spain ($3 billion) and Germany ($1.1 billion), together accounting for 63% of the total market. France, the Netherlands, Greece and Portugal accounted for 21% of the market. Portugal had the highest growth rate of market size.

Europe’s production of citrus fruit fell slightly in 2024, to 11 million tons. 

In 2024, approximately 521,000 hectares of citrus were harvested in the European Union, remaining stable from the previous year.

CONSUMPTION

The report states that the European Union’s consumption of citrus fruit in 2024 contracted to 11 million tons, declining by 9.1% from the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption hit record highs at 13 million tons in 2021, then dropped from 2022 to 2024.

The countries with the highest volumes of consumption in 2024 were Italy (3.2 million tons), Spain (2.8 million tons) and France (756,000 tons), together accounting for 62% of total consumption. Germany, Greece, the Netherlands and Portugal accounted for 22% of total consumption.

The countries with the highest levels of citrus fruit per capita consumption in 2024 were Greece (65 kilograms per person), Spain (60 kilograms per person) and Italy (55 kilograms per person). Oranges accounted for 53% of the total volume consumed.
