California’s huanglongbing (HLB, also known as citrus greening) quarantine and its Santa Clara Mediterranean fruit fly (Medfly) quarantine were recently expanded. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) in cooperation with the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) expanded the quarantines.
HLB
The HLB-quarantined area in Riverside County was expanded by 3 square miles. The action was taken because of HLB detections in plant tissue samples collected from a residential property in Riverside County. There are no acres of commercial citrus impacted by this expansion.
The APHIS Citrus Greening web page contains specific changes to the quarantined area in California.
MEDFLY
The Santa Clara Medfly quarantine includes portions of Alameda and Santa Clara counties. The new expansion only includes portions in Santa Clara County.
On Oct. 30, APHIS and CDFA expanded the quarantine in response to the confirmed detections on Oct. 21 of two wild mated female Medflies from a trap in a fig tree located on a residential property in the City of San Jose, Santa Clara County. This action expanded the quarantine by less than 1 square mile and does not include additional commercial agriculture.
On Nov. 3, the agencies further expanded the quarantine in response to the confirmed detections on Oct. 24 of one wild unmated female Medfly from a trap in a fig tree and of one wild mated female Medfly from a trap in a persimmon tree. Both traps were located on residential properties in the City of San Jose, Santa Clara County. This action expanded the quarantine by 7 square miles and does not include additional commercial agriculture.
The amended quarantine encompasses 205 total square miles with 47 acres of commercial agriculture that includes oranges, grapes, olives, peppers, stone fruit and tomatoes.
