This is the time of year freeze threatens citrus crops. The cold-hardy citrus region in North Florida, Alabama and Georgia has already experienced two freezes this season. A University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) feature on post-freeze citrus management will help growers achieve faster tree recovery. The article covers proper post-freeze practices for fertilization, irrigation, insect/disease/weed management and pruning.

In the January Citrus Nursery Source article, Peter Chaires discusses the current increased interest in fresh citrus utilization in Florida. Whether this is a temporary condition or the beginning of a more permanent shift in the state’s citrus industry remains to be seen. Hear more from Chaires in a video in the digital edition.

The January UF/IFAS Citrus State article addresses the possibility of selling citrus for flavor and fragrance instead of just juice and fruit. Scott Angle, leader of UF/IFAS, tells about a recent tour of the IFF Citrus Innovation Center and the work of UF/IFAS flavor chemist Yu Wang.

Finally, don’t miss the Pieces of the Past column. Brenda Eubanks Burnette shares the history of the Dundee Citrus Growers Association, including the role it played in helping to launch her career. Hear more reflections from Burnette in the digital edition of the January issue.
