Fresh orange production in Argentina is forecast at 680,000 metric tons (MT) for 2025–26 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA FAS). That’s an 80,000 MT increase from the previous year.

Argentine tangerine production is expected to reach 240,000 MT in 2025–26, based on favorable weather. That’s up from 180,000 MT the previous year.

PLANTED AREA

The projected planted area remains unchanged for oranges and tangerines at 37,000 hectares and 27,500 hectares, respectively. There has been no significant investment in area expansion in recent years.

Challenges faced by smaller citrus producers in Argentina are becoming increasingly apparent as they struggle to remain competitive in an evolving market. A clear trend has emerged where many of these small-scale growers are often choosing to sell their orchards to larger agricultural enterprises.

TRADE

For 2025–26, fresh orange exports from Argentina are expected to slightly decrease, reaching a total of 45,000 MT.

Tangerine exports are forecast slightly up at 25,000 MT.

Paraguay and neighboring countries dominate Argentina’s fresh orange exports, while European destinations continue to represent an important, though smaller, share of the market. In 2024, Paraguay was the largest destination for Argentine fresh orange exports, accounting for 52% of total shipments. Spain and Brazil followed as significant markets, accounting for 15% and 14%, respectively. The Netherlands accounted for 10% of exports.

Argentina’s orange export patterns from 2019 to 2024 highlight a highly volatile market structure, with sharp fluctuations across nearly all major destinations. Exports to Spain, historically a key buyer, declined significantly after 2019, reflecting reduced European Union demand and competition from lower-cost suppliers.

Argentine tangerines have a strong presence in both regional and distant markets, with Russia and Paraguay accounting for two thirds of the exported volume. In 2024, Russia was the leading destination for Argentine fresh tangerine exports, accounting for 37% of total shipments. Paraguay followed as the second largest market with 29%, while the Philippines represented 18% of exports. Brazil and Canada were smaller destinations, comprising 9% and 7% of total exports, respectively.
