The Georgia Citrus Association’s (GCA) annual conference is less than a week away. Georgia growers are encouraged to attend the Feb. 24 meeting and learn about various trends impacting the industry in the cold-hardy citrus region. The event takes place at the University of Georgia Tifton Campus Conference Center.

Lindy Savelle, executive director of the Georgia Citrus Association and member of the Georgia Citrus Commission, discussed what attendees can expect at this year’s meeting.

“We’re going to have lessons from Brazil. We’ve got a guest speaker coming in to talk about the CRISPR program and what he’s doing in the way of breeding for combating HLB,” Savelle said.

She added that there will be several speakers, discussing a range of topics.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Securing a Resilient Future for Georgia Citrus.” Scheduled presentations include:

  • Resilience Rooted in Collaboration
  • Lessons From Brazil: Sustaining High Production Despite HLB
  • Combating HLB in a New Citrus Frontier — Georgia
  • Research Spotlight: Weed Control Innovations
  • Soil Health and Orchard Longevity

Savelle said the conference this year is going to be different. Presentations will address different subject matters, and attendees will have access to new vendors.

“I’m excited about it,” Savelle said. “I get excited every year, but this year is going to be so encouraging. If you come, you’re going to get at least a nugget or two of new information, which I think is vital. You can’t just listen to the same thing over and over every year. What we try to do is bring in different perspectives and different subject matters. We’ve done that this year.”

The conference will start at 9 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m. Register here.
