Florida Citrus Show

The Florida Citrus Show is only two weeks away, scheduled for March 12. The event will be held at the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Indian River Research and Education Center and the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service U.S. Horticultural Research Laboratory in Fort Pierce.

The educational seminars have much to offer for both citrus and small fruit and vegetable growers. The crop-focused program will offer continuing education units toward the Florida pesticide license as a bonus for attendance.

CITRUS PROGRAM

After the morning session focused on Citrus Research and Field Trial programs, there will be a variety of citrus presentations covering a range of topics. Subjects include:

  • Citrus Research and Development Foundation update
  • Postfreeze considerations in citrus
  • The potential of transgenic citrus to resist HLB
  • Citrus breeders panel, featuring new varieties and rootstocks
  • Results from large-scale variety trials
  • Update on the Grove-First Project
  • Oxytetracycline best practices and performance results
  • Citrus black spot spread and quarantine update
SPECIALTY CROP PROGRAM

In recent years, the show has added a seminar program for small fruit and vegetable producers to widen the scope of the event and audience. Presentation topics will include:

  • Managing root-knot nematode in vegetables
  • Building better banker plants
  • Optimizing organic tomato and strawberry production
  • Avocado breeding for Central and South Florida
  • Irrigation: Reducing costs by reducing water
  • What’s the hype about regenerative agriculture?

In addition to the educational programs, the event includes a trade show of nearly 50 vendors displaying the goods and services growers need to succeed. The trade show features a tailgate-style lunch, which serves as a fun and casual way to network with fellow growers and industry peers.
