The New Varieties Development & Management Corp. (NVDMC) supports new variety development research to provide Florida citrus growers with unique, high-value varieties for the fresh and processed markets. The organization was established in 2005 just as HLB was confirmed in the state, making its mission even more important.
A name that has been synonymous with NVDMC is Frank Hunt of Hunt Brothers Cooperative. For most of NVDMC’s existence, Hunt has served as its chairman of the board. This year, Hunt decided to step away from that role.
A special luncheon was held at Golden Ridge Groves to honor Hunt’s years of service to the organization. Peter Chaires, NVDMC executive director, said Hunt’s steady leadership has been critical over the years.
“When we filed for articles of incorporation, we lacked leadership,” Chaires said. “Frank stepped forward and volunteered to be chairman right away. Having a grower like him come forward lent us a level of credibility for a new organization like NVDMC.”
The organization’s management structure evolved over time, and Hunt helped steady the ship as changes occurred.
“His steady hand not only kept us going but also kept us focused and operating as a cohesive group,” Chaires said. “We had board members coming and going and we needed his consistency. We want to thank him for his leadership and guidance and helping NVDMC to get where it is today.”
Hunt expressed gratitude for the recognition as he was presented with a commemorative bowl.
“I truly appreciate the recognition,” Hunt said. “I looked at my role as more of a support effort. The importance of new varieties and things that we can plant can’t be overstated. We are going to eventually solve HLB, and there will be a citrus industry in Florida. NVDMC is going to play a role in all this going forward.”
