Sour orange jumped six spots from the prior year to become the most-budded rootstock in Florida citrus nurseries in 2023–24. Rootstock US-942 had held the top spot for at least the last three years.
Valencia SPB-1-14-19 easily maintained its spot as the most-budded variety clone. It has held the top spot for at least four straight years.
The number of buddings were tabulated in the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Division of Plant Industry (FDACS DPI) Citrus Budwood Annual Report 2023–24.
FDACS DPI reported all citrus propagations in 2023–24 totaled 1,727,720. This includes propagations from 29 Florida citrus nurseries as well as those from regulatory, research facilities and out-of-state nurseries. The total is down from more than 2.4 million propagations the prior year. Polk County was easily the leader in propagations with 989,086, followed by Lake at 192,668, Sumter at 178,555 and DeSoto at 127,357.
