The February issue of Specialty Crop Grower magazine features Part 2 of results from the Citrus State of the Industry Survey. Florida growers reveal details on their planting intentions. Find out what varieties and rootstocks they’re selecting, what percent are growing citrus under protective screen, and other insights. Many Florida growers are taking advantage of Citrus Research and Field Trial Foundation funds to replant groves. In her article, Marisa Zansler, director of the Economic and Market Research Department at the Florida Department of Citrus, discusses what replanting efforts could mean for orange juice demand. Topics addressed include current trends with juice blends and consumer behavior.

This past season, lemon production in Florida exceeded that of tangerines and mandarins. This season, further lemon increases are forecast. With more growers looking at lemon production, questions are arising regarding rootstock choice. An article by University of Florida and U.S. Department of Agriculture scientists summarizes data from a multiyear field trial examining what rootstocks are graft compatible with the Eureka lemon variety. There were clear winners and losers in terms of yield.
