The value and production of Florida citrus both rose in the 2023–24 season. The $221 million preliminary on-tree value of the 2023–24 crop is 6% more than the $208 million revised value for 2022–23. All citrus production in 2023–24 is 20.2 million boxes, up 12% from the previous season’s 18.1 million boxes.
The figures were reported in the 2023–24 Citrus Summary released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service (USDA NASS). USDA NASS cooperates on the summary with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
PRODUCTION
All orange production increased by 14% to 18 million boxes. Non-Valencia production at 6.76 million boxes is up 10% from the 2022–23 season. Valencia orange production at 11.2 million boxes is up 16%.
All grapefruit production decreased 1% to 1.79 million boxes in 2023–24.
Tangerine and tangelo production in 2023–24 is down 6% from the previous season.
The top five Florida citrus-producing counties in 2023–24 were Polk (3.86 million boxes), DeSoto (3.14 million boxes), Highlands (2.79 million boxes), Hendry (2.37 million boxes) and Hardee (2.27 million boxes). Together they account for 71% of the state’s total citrus production.
Oranges constituted 89% of the citrus production. Grapefruit accounted for 9%. Tangerines and tangelos represented 2%.
RETURNS
Navel oranges in 2023–24 returned $16.65 per box for combined fresh and processed sales. That is up from $14.25 per box the prior season. As with all varieties, sales of the fruit to the fresh market were substantially higher than for fruit going to processing.
Non-Valencia oranges in 2023–24 returned $8.19 per box, down from $9.24 the prior season.
Valencia oranges in 2023–24 returned $9.51 per box, down from $10.05 the prior season.
Tangerines and tangelos had combined returns of $43.73 per box in 2023–24, up from $33.24 the prior year.
Grapefruit in 2023-24 returned $21.87 per box, up from $20.79 the prior season.
