Nelson Wulff of Fundecitrus recently signed a technical cooperation agreement between Fundecitrus and the National Center of Genetic Resources (Cenargen/Embrapa) for a project to develop biotechnological solutions for HLB. Wulff, coordinator of the Fundecitrus Biotechnology and Diagnostics Laboratory, signed the agreement at the 50th anniversary ceremony of Embrapa Genetic Resources and Biotechnology in Brazil.

Embrapa Genetic Resources and Biotechnology has been heavily involved in the exchange and quarantine of plant germplasm. It has contributed to the development and sustainability of national agriculture, innovation, competitiveness and biological control of pests.

“Cenargen enables important research solutions and promotes innovations in science and technology, in addition to benefiting the development of sustainable citrus farming,” Wulff said.

The project is coordinated by Embrapa researcher Francisco José Lima Aragão, who is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the Brazilian Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Among other work, Aragão led the development of genetically modified beans resistant to golden mosaic, a virus that attacks bean crops, and a study of a herbicide-resistant soybean cultivar.

Approximately 200 people attended the ceremony to mark Embrapa Genetic Resources and Biotechnology’s 50th anniversary.

Fundecitrus is an association maintained by citrus growers and juice manufacturers from the state of São Paulo in Brazil to foster the sustainable development of the citrus industry.
