The U.S. Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service (USDA/NASS) released its last citrus crop forecast update of the 2024-25 season on July 11.
The Florida Valencia orange forecast increased 2%, from 7.4 million boxes in June to 7.55 million boxes. That increased the Florida all-orange forecast from 12 million boxes in June to 12.15 million boxes.
Florida’s all-grapefruit forecast remained unchanged at 1.3 million boxes, compared to 2023–24 production of 1.79 million boxes.
Florida’s tangerine and mandarin forecast was unchanged since June at 400,000 boxes, compared to 450,000 boxes produced in 2023–24.
Florida’s lemon production forecast rose from 600,000 boxes in June to 670,000 boxes.
Matt Joyner, Florida Citrus Mutual executive vice president and CEO, issued the following statement following the forecast update:
“The path forward for Florida’s citrus industry is bright with new opportunities for growth. Promising treatments for citrus greening, disease-tolerant citrus varieties, targeted state funds to support research and replanting, and federal disaster relief programs like the USDA’s Supplemental Disaster Relief Program will equip citrus growers with the resources they need to recover and rebuild. The USDA’s July forecast of 12.15 million boxes (of oranges) marks the third consecutive month of production gains – an encouraging indicator that we’re on the path to a more resilient future. Our growers have shown incredible perseverance through citrus greening and hurricanes, and we remain hopeful that our growers can build on this momentum next season with continued improvements in tree health and fruit production.”
The final citrus production forecasts in all other U.S. states are:
- Arizona lemons – 1.12 million boxes, up from 950,000 boxes in June.
- California all oranges – 49 million boxes, up from 47.5 million boxes in June
