Brazil’s Fundecitrus recently hosted a delegation of approximately 20 agricultural leaders from California. Karen Ross, secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture, led the delegation. The group visited Brazil to learn more about Fundecitrus’ research, education, training and sustainability initiatives focused on citrus farming.

The Californians participated in technical discussions with researchers and took a tour of Fundecitrus’ laboratories.

Ross emphasized the importance of citrus farming to the economy and the health of populations in both Brazil and the United States. “We have common goals of feeding the world with nutritious products in a sustainable manner, ensuring that future generations can continue this work,” Ross said. “That’s exactly what we’re seeing here today. There’s much to learn from the great research talents we’ve met at Fundecitrus.”

Fundecitrus Executive Director Juliano Ayres emphasized the importance of such meetings to strengthen international partnerships and expand knowledge exchange. “Hosting a delegation from California is a valuable opportunity to share experiences, present what we are developing, and also learn from practices adopted in other countries,” Ayres said. “International collaboration is essential to address global challenges that impact citrus farming.”

Fundecitrus stated that the visit reinforces the importance of international cooperation for the advancement of science and agricultural production. It stated that bringing together experts from different countries around strategic topics for the citrus industry reaffirms Fundecitrus’ commitment to innovation, sustainability and strengthening institutional relationships globally.

Fundecitrus is an association maintained by citrus growers and juice manufacturers from São Paulo. The association aims to foster the sustainable development of the Brazilian citrus industry. Its mission includes developing research, disseminating knowledge and transferring technology to combat citrus diseases like HLB.

In addition to hosting groups like the California delegation, Fundecitrus researchers frequently visit other countries. One such visit is described in the Citrus Industry article, Fundecitrus Researchers Visit Australia on Greening Mission.
