Several Fundecitrus researchers recently made presentations at the Brazilian Workshop on Plant Disease Epidemiology, held in Pirenópolis, Goiás. The scientists discussed studies on disease epidemics affecting agricultural crops and management strategies.

CITRUS FLOWER ROT FORECASTING

Geraldo Silva Junior addressed the citrus flower rot forecasting system — developed in partnership with Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture University of São Paulo(ESALQ/USP) and the University of Florida — from the creation of the model to its application in the field. “Our objective is to continuously improve the model … so that it contributes effectively to decision-making and more efficient disease management,” he said.

STEM AND BRANCH ROT

Thiago Carraro presented data on outbreaks of stem and branch rot caused by fungi in the Botryosphaeriaceae family in the Citrus Belt. Carraro emphasized that the emergence of symptoms of these diseases is a growing concern. The diseases may be associated with both climatic stress factors, such as high temperatures, and the presence of plants infected with greening. This reinforces the need for attention and integrated management by citrus growers.

CITRUS GREENING

Isabela Primiano showed results of a study on the effect of dense planting at the edge of orchards on psyllids and the incidence of plants with citrus greening symptoms. Primiano said it is a technique that can be integrated into disease management. The study was supported by the São Paulo Research Foundation and Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation.

Daniel Steiner presented a study that evaluates different methods for quantifying the damage caused by citrus greening. Steiner is a doctoral student at ESALQ/USP, in partnership with Fundecitrus.

Fundecitrus researcher Renato Bassanezi, co-author of two papers, was also present at the event.

Fundecitrus stated that the results presented by its researchers contribute to the advancement of control strategies for the main diseases affecting citrus crops.
