Fundecitrus doctoral student Lisseth Bibiana Puentes Figueroa received the Best Paper award in the Agricultural Microbiology category at the XV Brazilian Symposium on Applied Microbiology/VII Latin American Meeting on Applied Microbiology. Figueroa is affiliated with the Graduate Program in Agricultural Microbiology at the Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture/University of São Paulo (ESALQ/USP) and is supervised by Fundecitrus researcher Franklin Behlau.
Figueroa presented research titled “In vitro antibiotic potential of Streptomyces spp. isolates from the Brazilian Caatinga against Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus surrogates.” The study investigates the use of bioactive compounds produced by the bacterium Streptomyces, naturally present in soils, to reduce the incidence of the bacterium that causes citrus greening. Bioactive compounds are natural substances present in foods, plants and other organisms that exert beneficial effects on the body.
“The results of this work contribute to the advancement of innovative microbiological and therapeutic approaches in the control of greening, consolidating the importance of research in combating the disease,” Figueroa said.
The research was developed in collaboration with Professor Luiz Alberto Beraldo de Moraes, coordinator of the Laboratory of Mass Spectrometry Applied to Microbial Metabolites at USP in Ribeirão Preto. The professor was responsible for the production and characterization of the molecules in the study. The work was funded by CAPES (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel) and supported by ESALQ/USP.
The symposium where Figueroa won the award brought together researchers and students from various countries to discuss scientific advances in the field of microbiology.
