California Yields Most Citrus per Acre

California led the nation in boxes-per-acre yield for every citrus variety grown in 2021–22, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (USDA/NASS) recently reported. The yields per acre, along with on-tree prices and other information, is in the agency’s Citrus Fruits 2022 Summary.

ORANGES

California’s 140,000 acres of bearing orange acres produced 289 boxes per acre in the 2021–22 season. That’s down from 348 boxes per acre the prior season. The average on-tree price per box in 2021–22 was $21.10.

Florida’s 317,100 bearing orange acres yielded 129 boxes per acre, down from 155 the prior season. The overall average on-tree price per box was $8.72. The price for fresh oranges averaged $16.55; the price for processed oranges averaged $8.19.

The 6,500 bearing orange acres in Texas yielded 31 boxes per acre, down drastically from 135 the prior season. The average on-tree price per box was $17.10. Texas growers have faced a number of weather issues impacting production in recent years; learn about them here.

GRAPEFRUIT

California’s 9,000 bearing grapefruit acres yielded 456 boxes per acre in 2021–22, down from 472 boxes the prior season. The average on-tree price per box was $12.38.

The 15,900 grapefruit acres in Florida yielded 209 boxes per acre in 2021–22, down from 218 boxes the prior season. The average overall on-tree price per box was $17.97. The price for fresh grapefruit averaged $25.55; the price for processed grapefruit averaged $8.78.

Texas’ 12,000 grapefruit acres yielded 140 boxes per acre in 2021–22, down from 160 boxes the prior season. The average on-tree price per box was $18.43.

TANGERINES/MANDARINS

California’s 69,000 acres of tangerines/mandarins yielded 252 boxes per acre in 2021–22, down from 430 boxes the prior season. The average on-tree price per box was $35.16.

Florida’s 7,200 tangerine/mandarin acres yielded 104 boxes per acre in 2021–22, down from 114 boxes the prior season. The average on-tree price per box was $26.33. The price for fresh tangerines/mandarins averaged $40.25; the price for processed fruit averaged $1.  

LEMONS

The 52,000 bearing acres of lemons in California yielded 479 boxes per acre in 2021–22, up from 428 boxes the prior season. The average on-tree price per box was $15.69.

Arizona’s 6,800 lemon acres yielded 140 boxes per acre in 2021–22, up from 107 the prior season. The average on-tree price per box was $19.63.
