A Chinese official’s visit to new citrus facilities in Pakistan showcased citrus research and growing agricultural cooperation between Pakistan and China.
Sun Yan, consul general of the People’s Republic of China in Lahore, Pakistan, inaugurated a newly established climate-controlled glasshouse and screen house at the Citrus Research Institute (CRI) in Sargodha. He was briefed on the institute’s research programs, citrus nursery production systems, disease-free plant propagation techniques and efforts at promoting climate-resilient citrus cultivation.
Sargodha is an important citrus-producing region in Pakistan, particularly known for Kinnow mandarins. The expansion of research capabilities there could have implications for the region’s citrus industry as growers face climate, disease and production challenges.
Sun commended the initiatives taken by CRI officials to advance citrus research and contribute to a sustainable citrus industry in Pakistan.
During the visit, Sun inaugurated the University of Sargodha’s (UoS) Drone Lab and Research Centre for Excellence in Agriculture. UoS Vice Chancellor Qaisar Abbas briefed Sun on UoS collaborations with Chinese universities.
