HLB-Tolerant Mandarin Hybrids Show Promise

As citrus growers continue searching for varieties that can perform under huanglongbing (HLB) pressure, researchers are looking beyond tree survival. Fruit quality, flavor and consumer acceptance are becoming increasingly important parts of the equation.

A new study evaluated several HLB-tolerant mandarin hybrids and identified selections that combine disease tolerance with traits that could make them attractive for fresh-market production.

An article about the research — “Volatile and non-volatile profiling of HLB-tolerant mandarins: Identifying superior selections with enhanced fruit quality” — was published in the journal Scientia Horticulturae. The study was conducted by Thais Freitas, Matthew R. Mattia, Anne Plotto, Kristen A. Jeffries, Erin N. Rosskopf and Jinhe Bai. The authors are affiliated with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service Citrus and Other Subtropical Products Research Unit in Fort Pierce, Florida.

The researchers evaluated six HLB-tolerant mandarin hybrids and compared them with commercial cultivars, including US Early Pride and Sugar Belle®. They examined traditional fruit characteristics such as size, color, firmness, peelability, seedlessness, sugar levels and acidity. They also used advanced testing methods to measure aroma compounds and nutritional components that influence flavor and fruit appeal.

The study found significant differences among the HLB-tolerant selections. Several hybrids showed desirable combinations of fruit quality traits, including good appearance, balanced sugar-to-acid ratios and favorable taste ratings. Researchers identified FF-1-35-25, FF-1-35-72, FF-1-35-96 and FF-1-26-131 as promising fresh-market candidates. Another selection, FF-1-21-30, produced some of the largest fruit among those evaluated.

Researchers also found that some selections contained higher levels of beneficial plant compounds, including flavonoids and carotenoids. These compounds contribute to fruit nutritional value and may help differentiate future citrus varieties in the marketplace.

The research highlights an important shift in breeding efforts. Developing HLB-tolerant trees is only part of the challenge. New varieties must also produce fruit that consumers want to buy.

The hybrid selections evaluated are not available for commercial planting. Additional field evaluations, yield testing and production studies will be needed. However, the findings provide valuable information for breeding programs working to deliver citrus varieties that can maintain quality while facing ongoing HLB challenges.

As the citrus industry adapts to HLB, varieties that combine tree resilience with strong flavor, appearance and marketability could become important tools for future grove profitability.
