See what’s new in citrus in the April issue of Citrus Industry magazine.

In this month’s cover story, an established company gets a new name. As the next generation joins the business, learn how DLF International has transitioned to Feek Family Citrus in Fort Pierce, Florida. Trying new things and carefully monitoring costs are a few of the ways this grower/packer/shipper continues to succeed in today’s challenging Florida citrus market. Learn more about the business, including its new cold-storage facility, in the April issue.

With labor costs escalating, some growers have a new interest in mechanical harvesting. A recent field day demonstrated machine harvesting in an experimental super-high-density grove in Lake Placid, Florida. The grove’s first mechanical harvest achieved a high pick rate, and trees seem to be standing up to HLB better than in lower density groves.

Trunk-injection of oxytetracycline is one of the newest techniques being deployed to battle HLB. Recently, a panel of producers from the Gulf Citrus Growers Association convened in Immokalee, Florida, to discuss their experiences using the treatment. They shared what they’ve learned to date and addressed questions from the audience. Participating growers were Ron English, Florida’s Natural Growers/Ranch 1; David Wheeler, Wheeler Farms; and Joby Sherrod, Alico Inc. Ute Albrecht, University of Florida lead researcher on trunk injection, moderated the panel.

There’s a new team leading Florida’s Bureau of Citrus Budwood Registration. Find out who bureau chief Justin Ezell has named to his team and what areas they are focusing on. The details are in the Citrus Nursery Source feature by Peter Chaires.

Finally, be sure to check out the program for the Florida Citrus Show in the April issue. The seminar schedule is included as well as a directory of exhibitors participating in the tailgate-style trade show. Growers can get free admission to the April 3 event in Fort Pierce by preregistering here.
