Fruit quality and yield remain major concerns for sweet orange growers in the HLB era. Both are closely linked to the tree’s ability to support developing fruit throughout the season.
Leaves are the primary source of carbohydrates needed for fruit growth, retention and juice development. Canopy density and leaf area directly influence how much energy is available to support fruit production. Unfortunately, HLB-affected trees typically develop sparse canopies with fewer functional leaves, This reduces carbohydrate availability and increases the risk of smaller fruit, lower juice quality, and preharvest fruit drop.
RESEARCH RESULTS
Over the past several years, multiple field studies have consistently shown that fruit supported by healthy canopies and higher leaf numbers perform better throughout the season.
In one study, Valencia fruits that showed no symptoms had about 40% more leaves than those with HLB symptoms. These healthier fruits also grew better, held onto their leaves longer and produced higher-quality juice. Similarly, larger fruits were consistently found on branches with more leaves and bigger leaf areas. Smaller fruits were usually on branches with fewer leaves.
A statewide survey confirmed that more leaves at harvest time were linked to better fruit retention and higher juice quality. Branches bearing more leaves produced fruit with higher Brix levels.
To better define canopy requirements, a two-year source-sink study examined the relationship between leaf number and fruit development. Results indicated that both total leaf availability and leaf-to-fruit ratio are critical determinants of fruit size, retention and quality.
Across seasons, fruit supported by approximately 30 leaves per fruit performed best. Leaf support was especially important early in the season for fruit growth and retention. Later in development, higher leaf numbers contributed to improved juice quality and sugar accumulation.
GROWER RECOMMENDATIONS
The collective message from these studies is clear: Leaf number matters. Improving fruit quality in HLB-affected trees is fundamentally a canopy-management challenge. Because leaf drop often begins to increase during the fall months (particularly around October), August is an ideal time for growers to evaluate canopy condition and implement practices that improve leaf retention and longevity before significant leaf loss occurs. Maintaining a productive canopy through harvest helps sustain carbohydrate supply during critical periods of fruit maturation and juice accumulation.
Key practices include:
- Use precision nutrient management and regular leaf testing to maintain optimal levels of calcium, potassium, magnesium, boron and zinc that support canopy vigor, leaf function and fruit quality.
- Prioritize leaf retention through harvest. Research indicates that maintaining leaves during late summer and fall is closely associated with improved fruit retention and higher juice quality.
- Consider gibberellic acid applications to delay leaf aging, prolong leaf lifespan and maintain a productive photosynthetic canopy later into the season. Extending leaf longevity can help sustain carbohydrate production during critical stages of fruit development.
- Incorporate biostimulants such as seaweed extracts, where appropriate, to support canopy health, stress tolerance and overall tree function.
As growers prepare for the fall leaf-drop period, efforts should focus on maintaining and rejuvenating the canopy rather than simply managing the crop. Investments in practices that promote new leaf growth, reduce leaf loss and extend leaf longevity are likely to improve fruit.
